Schedule Gestalt

We want to leave some of the afternoon blocks of time open for students to work on their own data analysis with help from instructors:

  1. Day 1: 4 filled blocks, 1 open block
  2. Day 2: 3 filled blocks, 2 open blocks
  3. Day 3: 3 filled blocks, 2 open blocks
  4. Day 4: 1 filled block, 1 open block

The 11 structured blocks will include some lectures and some "demos" / "hands-on" analysis, with an instructor working through analysis or demonstrating program features,

Lectures

Name

Description

1

Overview/Theory

an overview of XAFS, with fundamentals of theory

2

EXAFS Analysis 1

general EXAFS analysis, featuring a simple real problem

3

XANES

general description of XANES, with lots of example spectra on different edges and some molecular orbital descriptions

4

Data processing

merging, corrections, normalization, background subtraction, Fourier transforms.

5

Other Techniques

XAFS and other techniques: compare / contrast

6

EXAFS Analysis 2

more advanced topics in analysis

Demos

Name

Description

1

Data analysis #1

to follow lecture 2 closely, using Artemis on a simple example

2

Data processing

to follow lecture 4 closely, using Athena.

3

XANES linear combination

XANES analysis with linear algebra, Athena.

4

Data analysis #2

something a bit more complicated

5

Data analysis #3

something else a bit more complicated (multiple data sets??)
