NSLS-II Damping Wiggler XAS Station: Initial Workshop Announcement
This message was sent to the members of the NSLS XAS community on 17 September, 2007 using a mailing list provided by the NSLS User Office:
Dear colleague, As a member of the NSLS X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy community you may know that the NSLS-II project has recognized X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy as one of the core competencies of the future NSLS-II community and, accordingly, has designated one of the six NSLS-II Project Beamlines to be an XAS facility. This will be one of the initial beamlines built as part of the NSLS-II construction project. The NSLS-II management requires the formation of a Beamline Advisory Team (BAT) for each of the project beamlines (as it will for all future NSLS-II beamlines). The purpose of the BAT is to define the scientific mission of the beamline and to provide expertise and oversight for the design, construction and commissioning of that beamline. The initial step in the formation of the BAT is to hold a workshop that will assess the needs of the community and define the beamline's scientific mission to respond to those needs. It is expected that the BAT will form during or shortly after the workshop. The first order of business for the BAT will be to submit a Letter of Intent to NSLS-II presenting the BAT membership and outlining their vision for the scientific mission and technical requirements of the beamline. This Letter of Intent will be reviewed by the Experimental Facilities Advisory Committee (EFAC) who will make recommendations to the NSLS-II project. The purpose of this email to state that I am volunteering, along with Paul Northrup (the NSLSII contact person for the XAS Project Beamline), to organize the workshop, which is tentatively scheduled for mid-January. More information about the workshop and about the intentions of the NSLS-II management regarding the formation of the XAS BAT can be found at http://xafs.org/NSLSII/DampingWigglerXasStation. You will be hearing from Paul and I throughout the autumn as plans for the workshop begin to take shape. We welcome your input and suggestions -- anyone wishing to contribute to the workshop is encouraged to contact one of us. Regards, Bruce Ravel and Paul Northrup
